Massive 8.8 Quake Strikes Chilie

A massive magnitude 8.8 earthquake jolted Chile early Saturday, killing at least 78 people and triggering tsunami warnings for the entire Pacific basin. The 8.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Chile Saturday was about the same intensity as the fifth most powerful quake recorded since 1900. Chilean President Michelle Bachelet said she expected the death toll to rise. "We are taking all the necessary measures at this time," she told reporters. Officials did not give any information on the number of those injured. The full extent of the damage was not yet known, but there were reports of collapsed buildings.

Quake Strikes Caymen Islands

A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck Tuesday just off the Cayman Islands according to the U.S. Geological Survey said. The quake struck 6.2-miles deep at 9:23 a.m. ET, 40 miles from George Town, Cayman Islands. George Town, the capital, is on the western shore of Grand Cayman Island. There were no immediate reports of injuries in the three-island chain in the Caribbean. The British territory of the Cayman Islands is about 600 miles (1,000 kilometers) west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, which was devastated last week by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake. Tuesday's quake struck about 32 miles (52 kilometers) east-southeast of Bodden Town in the center of the southern coast of Grand Cayman Island.

Quake Strikes Venezuela

(CNN) -- An earthquake with preliminary magnitude of 5.6 struck eastern Venezuela on Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The quake's epicenter was about 25 miles from Carupano, near the Caribbean coast in northeastern Venezuela, the agency said. It was 7 miles deep.

Major Quake Devestates Haiti

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Tuesday near Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, the U.S. Geological Survey reports. A major earthquake struck southern Haiti on Tuesday, knocking down buildings and power lines and inflicting new misery on the Western Hemisphere's poorest nation. The U.S. State Department had been told to expect "serious loss of life."

Quake Leaves 20,000 Homeless

About 20,000 people were left homeless Sunday, after a 5.1-magnitude earthquake hit eastern Tajikistan on Saturday, according to media reports in Russia and Tajikistan. The quake shook Tajikistan's mountainous Gorno-Badakhshan province about 7:15 a.m. local time. The 20,000 people were left homeless in the villages of Rog and Gishkon, where 1,050 mud dwellings were destroyed, according Russia's RIA Novosti news agency.

Iranian Quake Injures 700

An earthquake struck southern Iran's Hormozgan province early Wednesday, injuring about 700 people, state-run media reported. Residents of the port city of Bandar Abbas poured into the streets after the 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck at 2:56 a.m. (6:26 p.m. ET Tuesday), Iran's Press TV said. No deaths were reported. Iran lies on a series of seismic fault lines and has experienced devastating earthquakes -- most notably in December 2003 when a 6.6 magnitude quake devastated the ancient city of Bam in southeast Iran, killing at least 30,000 people.

Fourth Major Quakes Strike Pacific Only 70 Minutes Apart

For the fourth time in less than 11 hours, a major earthquake rocked the South Pacific Ocean near the island nation of Vanuatu on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported

The first quake, with a magnitude of 7.8, struck at 9:03 a.m. (6:03 p.m. ET) at a depth of 35 km (22 miles) and an epicenter 295 km (180 miles) north-northwest of Luganville, Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

A second quake, with a magnitude of 7.7, struck 15 minutes later at the same depth and an epicenter of 340 km (210 miles) north-northwest of Luganville.

The third quake, with a magnitude of 7.1, struck at 10:13 a.m. (7:13 p.m. ET) at about the same depth and an epicenter of 280 km (175 miles) north-northwest of Luganville.

Strong Quake Hits Tonga

A strong earthquake Friday rattled Tonga -- and more than a few nerves. The 6.3-magnitude quake was latest in a series quakes that have rattled the region this week, spawning tsunamis and leaving several hundred dead. The epicenter was at sea about 55 miles (85 km) southeast of Hihifo, Tonga, at a depth of about 6 miles (10 km). The quake did not trigger a tsunami warning, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. On Tuesday, a magnitude 8.0 quake-triggered tsunami killed at least 111 people in the Samoan islands and Tonga. The towering waves swept across a wide swath of the Pacific Ocean, killing dozens and flattening or submerging villages.

Second Indonesia Quake Kills More than 1,100

At least 1,100 people are dead in Indonesia as a result of two large earthquakes in as many days, United Nations humanitarian chief John Holmes told reporters Thursday. Hundreds more are believed to be injured, Holmes said. "These numbers, I fear, will rise as more information becomes available," he said. "It's still feared that thousands of people are trapped under damaged houses and many buildings." Telecommunications are difficult into the region, roads are cut off and the hardest-hit area, including the city of Padang, lacks power and other services, Holmes said. Heavy rainfall also has hindered search and rescue efforts.

Samoa Quake Kills 111

Towering tsunami waves triggered by an 8.0 earthquake left at least 111 people dead in the Samoan islands. Entire villages are flattened or submerged. "I thought it was the end of the world," said Salamo Laumoli, director of health services at a medical center in Pago Pago, the capital of American Samoa.

A tsunami warning for the South Pacific was called off hours after a magnitude 8.0 earthquake was recorded near American Samoa, but the extent of the damage of earlier tsunami waves was still unfolding.

Quake Kills 13 in Indonesia

Thirteen people were killed in Indonesia after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Wednesday, officials said.

Deustche Bank employees exit their building in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Wednesday after a major 7.0 earthquake.

The quake was initially categorized as magnitude 7.4 before being downgraded to 7.0 by geological officials.

The 13 were killed in different cities in West Java province on the Indonesian island of Java, rescue officials said. No other details were immediately available about the deaths.

At least 18 other people were injured around the capital, Jakarta, said Rustam Pakaya, a Health Ministry spokesman.

A tsunami watch went into effect and quickly expired, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

It struck about 2:55 p.m. (3:55 a.m. ET) and was centered 242 km (150 miles) from Jakarta, according the U.S. Geological Survey.

Major Earthquake off New Zealand

A major earthquake struck off the coast of New Zealand's South Island Wednesday night, rattling residents and prompting a tsunami warning that was later canceled.

The 7.8-magnitude quake did not generate any significant tsunami activity according to the the U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

Twenty minutes after the tremor, a 5.8-magnitude aftershock struck the same region, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, which measures earthquakes around the world.

Another Earthquake Jolts China

Officials have estimated that more than 18,000 homes have been destroyed from an earthquake that struck southwest China, state media reported. Xinhua reported the moderate quake as having a 6.0-magnitude, while the U.S. Geological Survey gave a figure of 5.7. The quake hit Yunnan province in southwest China Thursday evening, leaving more than 300 people injured, the Xinhua news service reported. The quake happened at 7:19 p.m. (11:19 a.m. GMT) Thursday, at a depth of about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), Xinhua reported.
